Mid-Atlantic Burn Camp Soothes Survivors
August 8, 2003 Story By Alan Etter, Photo Courtesy Ed Bunyan For the past 15 years, the not-for-profit Mid-Atlantic Burn Camp has been an oasis for burn survivors. Helping patients and their families cope with the physical and psychological injuries is the focus of the program, but for the many children it serves |
| an opportunity to gather with other
children who've had similar experiences is priceless. The camp, held this year August 17-21, takes place on the grounds of Camp Brethren Woods near Harrisonburg, Virginia. It features a host of activities, including games, softball, arts and crafts and swimming. Children get to see that their physical trauma is shared by many people. Counselors work with the children to help them cope with the social stigma often attached to such injuries. Visitor's Day will be held on August 21st. Everyone is invited to visit the camp and see how it operates and become part of a special community. For more information, call the camp directors, Tonas Kalil and Linda French at 410-531-5942.
