DCFD Line of Duty Memorial

1. May 6, 1856 Volunteer Fireman Benjamin C. Greenup of Columbia Fire Co. 1 was killed as a result of being thrown from the fire unit and run over while en-route to a fire call at Shreeve's Stable on 7th St NW.

2. February 15, 1877 Foreman Thomas H Robinson of Truck 1 died of injuries he sustained on February 7, 1877 as a result of being thrown from the fire unit and run over while responding to a local alarm

3. August 18, 1882 Driver Joseph Daniels of Engine 3 died of injuries he sustained on August 17, when the steamer overturned on him while returning from a fire.

4. February 20, 1891 Pvt. Thomas R. Newman of Truck A died of injuries sustained on February 19, 1891 when the fire unit he was on was struck by a cable car at 7th & D St's NW.

5. December 12, 1893 Foreman Zedock Williams of Chemical 1 suffocated at a fire in the Blau Building 700 14th St NW.

6- 8 July 25, 1894 on this day three DC Fireman were killed in the line of duty as a result of burning to death at a fire at Knox's Express Stables 2nd & B St NW. Assistant Foreman Sam. Mastin and Pvt's Michael R. Fenton and Dennis O'Donoghue all from Engine Company 1.

9. June 3, 1895 Engineer Thomas J. Martin of Engine Company 6 died from being over come by heat at a stable fire at 710 North Capital ST. NW

10- 14 May 18, 1896 on this date five DC Fireman were killed in the line of duty when a wall collapsed on them while fighting a fire at the Commission House on Louisiana Ave NW. Assistant Foreman Thomas A. Griffen of Truck B, Pvt Daniel Conway of Engine 9, Assistant Foreman George H Giles of Engine 9, Pvt Joseph Mulhally of Engine 8 and Assistant Foreman George Kettler of Engine 8.

15. August 12, 1896 Engineer John D. Angell died in quarters, his death was ruled a line of duty death.

16. March 4, 1897 Assistant Foreman John A. Merriman of Engine 6 was struck and killed by a B&O Train while returning to the fire house from the fire ground 308 13th St NW.

17. July 2, 1900 Substitute Pvt. Martin J. Niland of Engine 7 was killed in a collision between the fire unit and street car at 9th & R St's NW.

18. February 7, 1901 Pvt Charles A. Keefe of Truck B was killed in a collision with a street car at Connecticut & M St's NW.

19. October 15, 1904 Pvt Arthur H. Gibbins of Truck G died of a disease contracted while on duty.

20 November 15, 1905 Driver Joseph H McGinnis of Engine 1 was killed when he was thrown from the unit while responding to a fire at 21st & F St's NW.

21. December 13, 1908 Chief Engineer ( Fire Chief ) William Belt died of a heart attack at home.

22. January 10, 1909 Lt. Francis M Smith of Engine 11 died as a result of heart disease. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

23. February 14, 1910 Driver William Caton of Engine 18 was killed when he was thrown from his fire truck while responding to a fire at 1308 1st NW.

24. July 27, 1910 Pvt Stewart K. Rosenberger of Engine 10 was killed when he fell from a ladder while working on the fire ground at 14th & H St NE.

25. June 17, 1911 Driver Lee Beall of Engine 22 was thrown from a horse while exercising then he was hit by a truck and left to die.

26 & 27.October 14, 1911 Pvt M.A. Downs and Captain Timothy J. Brown of Engine 4 were killed when the roof they were standing on collapsed while they were fighting a fire at the Washington Tobacco Co. 618 Pennsylvania St NW.

28. November 10, 1916 Sergeant Fred Koch of Engine 2 died of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

29. December 18, 1916 Captain Charles A. E. Watt of Truck 6 died of injuries he sustained from a fall off a step ladder while repairing a harness assembly in quarters.

30 December 28 1917 Pvt Simon F. Holohan of Truck 2 was killed when he was thrown from the unit while responding on a call to 17th & S St's NW Box 244.

31. October 11, 1918 Pvt William H. Richards of Engine 11 died from influenza contracted in the line of duty.

32 October 12, 1918 Lt. Frank O. Markward of Truck 4 died from influenza contracted in the line of duty.

33. October 15, 1918 Pvt William T. Byran of Engine 24 died from influenza contracted in the line of duty.

34. October 18, 1918 Pvt Frederick W. Cheeney of Truck 6 died from influenza contracted in the line of duty.

35. October 23, 1918 Pvt. Thomas A. Binaco of Engine 8 died from influenza contracted in the line of duty.

36. December 29, 1918 Battalion Fire Chief Charles B Proctor of the Third Battalion was stricken by a "stroke of apoplexy" at Engine 3's quarters, taken to his home where he passed.

37. December 29, 1918 Pvt John F. Farr died from influenza contracted in the line of duty.

38 August 27, 1925 Pvt James L. Mann of Engine 21 was killed in a collision with a street car while responding to 14th & Harvard St NW.

39 March 2, 1927 Pvt. Edward F. Laughton of Engine 25 was killed when a chimney fell on him while fighting a fire at 4th & Portland St SE.

40 March 18, 1927 Captain James Mowatt of Engine 2 died from a heart attack while on a fire at 420 Oakland St NW.

41. June 22, 1927 Pvt Harry L. Stout of Truck 2 died from injuries he sustained on April 23, 1927 from a fall in quarters.

42. July 26, 1927 Lt. Samuel L Gallahan of Engine 26 died when a car struck the fire truck he was on.

43. October 27, 1928 Pvt Albert J. Greiner of Engine 27 was killed when a piece of timber hit him in the head during a detail at the Fox Theater.

44. May 26, 1930 Captain Harry W. Swann of Engine 12 was killed when he fell into an elevator shaft during a fire at Stein's Store Fixture Factory .

45. June 13, 1930 Battalion Fire Chief Peter R. Davis of the Fourth Battalion was killed on the fire ground at 1332 New York Ave NW as a result of a fall from a ladder ( Chief Davis was Acting Deputy Fire Chief. )

46. July 5, 1931 Battalion Fire Chief John H. Virstein of the Third Battalion was killed as a result of a roof collapse during a church fire at 2564 Nicholas Ave SE ( now MLK Ave. )

47 February 19, 1932 Pvt Maurice P.Corbett of Truck 4 was killed as a result of a collision with a street car at 11 & P St's NW.

48 February 23, 1933 Captain Robert G. Anderson of Engine 22 died from a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

49. October 18, 1934 Fire Inspector Myron W. Thayer died from a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

50. November 29, 1936 Battalion Fire Chief Patrick J Sullivan of the Seventh Battalion died of a coronary occlusion. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

51 November 29, 1936 Pvt. Albert F Gauvreau of Truck 4 died from illness. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

52 December 3, 1936 Pvt William H. Hill of Truck 11 died from a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

53. January 16, 1937 Lt. Gilbert W. Fletcher of Engine 20 died of illness, his death was ruled a line of duty death.

54. March 10, 1937 Sgt. Vernon C. Robinson of Engine 17 was killed in a collision with a taxicab and a fire truck at 13th & Irving St NW.

55. March 29, 1938 Pvt. Walter W. Imboden of Engine 5 died from a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

56. April 11, 1938 Battalion Fire Chief Twyman S. Jones of the Fifth Battalion died of carcinoma and arteriosclerosis. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

57 February 27, 1939 Chief Engineer Charles E. Schrom died from heart disease. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

58. April 5, 1939 Fire Inspector George N. Haller died from heart disease. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

59. July 30, 1939 Pvt Samuel Walter of Engine 15 died from a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

60 July 10, 1940 Captain Raymond E. Oden of Engine 17 died from a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

61 October 4, 1940 Fire Inspector John R. Gray died from a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

62. July 28, 1943 Pvt Everett L Ownes of Truck 1 was killed in a collision while on duty.

63. November 2, 1943 Pvt William Caton of Truck 8 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death

64 July 4, 1944 Pvt Joseph A Carter Jr of Engine 4 died from back injures he suffered while on a fire at 2214 George Ave NW.

65. December 6, 1944 Captain Thomas S. Barber of Engine 1 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death

66 December 24, 1944 Pvt Dewey W. Neil of the fire boat died from heart disease. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

67. February 11, 1945 Pvt Maurice T. Hizer of Truck 4 died from illness while on duty on January 3, 1945.  His death was ruled a line of duty death.

68 December 27, 1946 Pvt Earl O. Negley of Truck 2 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

69 September 29, 1947 Albert E. Mitchler of Rescue Squad 2 died from a illness while on duty.

70 December 4, 1947 Pvt Lloyd A Irwin of Engine 25 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

71 December 30, 1947 Pvt Leon M Nevitt of Truck 2 was killed while fighting a fire at 711 G St. NW on Box 165.

72. August 15, 1949 Pvt Edward G. Williams of Truck 12 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

73 May 4, 1950 Pvt Ernest W Howard of the Communication Division died as a result of a heart attack. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

74 September 20, 1952 Pvt Allen Lewis of Engine 31 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

75. November 2, 1954 Sgt. Barton M. Ewers of Truck 1 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

76. December 19, 1954 Pvt Millard F. Coxen of Truck 16 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

77. February 24, 1955 Captain George R, Flaherty of Engine 1 died of smoke inhalation at a five alarm fire at the Union Hardware Store, 700 D St NW Box 124.

78. April 21, 1955 Pvt Preston T. Garrison of Truck 13 died from burns and smoke inhalation after falling through the roof during a third alarm fire in the 1300 blk of Linden Ct. NE.

79. March 15, 1956 Pvt Albert M Hazel of Engine 12 died as a result of a heart attack while on the fire ground during a three alarm fire at 2525 Minnesota Ave SE. His death was ruled a line of duty death Box 9247.

80. July 19, 1957 Auxiliary Fireman William W. Hoak of Engine 31 was killed as a result of being run over by the pumper while laying out during a fire call on Connecticut Ave NW.

81. December 18, 1957 Sgt. John Richards of Engine 20 died as a result of heart problems. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

82. October 30, 1960 Pvt James B. Curtis of Engine 14 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

83. November 13, 1961 Pvt. Joseph I Looney of Engine 26 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

84. March 21, 1965 Pvt William E. Schuffner of Rescue Squad 2 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

85. March 1, 1965 Pvt Charles M Chamberlain ( Aide ) of Engine 28 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

86. April 29, 1965 Lt. Eugene B Davis of  Fire Prevention died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

87. August 2, 1968 Pvt Hunter L Vaughan of Rescue Squad 1 died as a result of a heart attack while on duty. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

88. January 7, 1970 Earl C Kite of Truck 10 died of an illness caused by inhalation of fumes from burning chemicals while fighting a fire at the Washington Navy Yard on January 6, 1970.

89. October 20, 1970 Joseph R. Criscuolo of Rescue Squad 1 died from injuries while on duty.

90. February 15, 1971 Deputy Fire Chief Vance T. Bartley of the Apparatus Division died of heart disease. His death was ruled a line of duty death.

91 June 26, 1971 Pvt Maurice T Turner of Engine 16 was killed at a four alarm fire when a wall fell on him at 472 L St NW. Box 298.

92 November 23, 1983 Pvt Calvin L Steve of Engine 12 died as a result of a fall from a fire truck on November 12, while responding to 1300 Vermont Ave NW.

93 December 19, 1984 Pvt John T. Williams of Rescue Squad 1 died after falling through a roof while fighting a fire at 1401 H St NW.

94. December 1, 1987 F/F Clifford R. Oliver of Rescue Squad 3 died of a cerebrovascular accident during a water rescue drill.

95 October 24, 1997 Sgt. John M. Carter of the First Battalion was killed while fighting a fire at 5th & Kennedy St NW. 

96. May 30, 1999 F/F Anthony Phillips of Engine 10 was killed while fighting a fire 3146 Cherry Rd NE.

97.May 31, 1999 F/F Louis J. Matthews of Engine 26 died from injures he suffered while fighting a fire at 3146 Cherry Rd NE.

98. July 9, 1999 F/T Costello N. Robinson of Engine 2 died after being admitted to the hospital for injuries suffered on July 8 while on duty. 

99. July 7, 2007 F/F-Tech James McRae III of Truck 12 died after being admitted to the hospital suffering shortness of breath at the quarters of Engine 20 while on duty.
