Ice Rescue Training Performed

January 24, 2004... Members of D.C.'s rescue squads got to test their skills in the frigid Potomac River during an ice and cold water rescue training exercise at the fireboat pier on Saturday, January 24. Led by the fireboat crew under the supervision of Captain Kane, the assembled firefighters were given a classroom presentation on the dangers associated with ice rescues and other cold water scenarios. Afterwards, members suited up in cold water rescue suits and put their classroom lectures to practical application, playing rescuer and victim alike. The biting cold and ice laden waters of the Washington channel provided the perfect setting for the training scenario, which was also witnessed and videotaped by several local media outlets.
