Truck 3 was dispatched on a service call
shortly after noon time to assist MPD with forcing entry at
1709 Vermont Ave, Northwest.
While attempting to force entry,
members had to abandon the property and
take cover as a loud blast was heard followed by the sound of
possible gunshots.
Sgt. Lenny Burke of
Truck 3 requested the full assignment as smoke became visible
from the first floor of the dwelling. Firefighters from Engine
16, Truck 3 and Squad 1 made entry through the front door, a
search of the second floor provided a brief moment of
additional stress as firefighters encountered a semiconscious
adult male laying in a bathtub armed with a handgun and
suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Firefighters were
able to quickly disarm the man and remove him from the fire
building to an awaiting EMS unit for transport to a local
hospital.
