A raging three alarm fire heavily damaged a major portion of the historic Eastern Market on Capital Hill Monday morning, April 30th.

Firefighters arrived at the block long, two-story building at 7th and C Streets S.E. shortly before 1 A.M. There was heavy fire on side "C" of the South Hall that was rapidly extending northward and into the cockloft of the 134 year old heavy timber structure. A second alarm was immediately requested.

An interior attack was initiated, but units had to be pulled out due to the heavy volume of fire and the potential for roof collapse.

Master streams were then brought into play, and the building was deluge with a barrage of water from five ladder pipes and other heavy duty streams. A third alarm was also sounded.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire before it could spread into the North Hall, where the art and pottery stalls are located. However, the other 2/3 of the market was severely damaged.

It took approximately two hours before the blaze could be declared under control. There were no injuries.
