April 8, 2007...Vito Maggiolo

A motor blazing under a metro subway car brought scores of firefighters to the Waterfront Station of the transit system on Easter Sunday morning, April 8th.

When units arrived at the station at 4th and M Streets S.W. shortly after 10 A.M., they found heavy smoke conditions and passengers quickly evacuating up the escalators.

Once power was confirmed shut down, an attack was initiated, but was made difficult due to the location of the burning motor on the undercarriage of the car facing the station wall rather than the platform.

A search was also conducted of the station and train to ensure no civilians had been overcome by smoke, which proved negative. Ventilation also proved a difficult task, as initial efforts to clear the smoke using metro vent fans proved unsuccessful.

Firefighters were finally able to get water on the fire, which was than quickly knocked it down. There were no injuries reported.
