An electrical fire possibly generated by wind and rain from tropical depression Ernesto sent flames throughout the walls of a home on Allison Street N.W.

As the storm was whipping through the Washington area, a box alarm was sounded reporting smoke in the home at 1614 Allison Street N.W. Due to numerous weather related calls in the area, Rescue Squad 2 arrived first at the 2.5 story row dwelling, and immediately encountered smoke conditions inside.

Units began to open the walls, and found fire that was already burning on the first and second floors and extending into the attic. Initial attempts to cut electricity to the house were unsuccessful, and the power company was urgently requested.

As a Working Fire Dispatch was sounded, firefighters used a minimal amount of water to contain the blaze until PEPCO could arrive and isolate the power. However, even the electric company failed in their initial efforts to kill electric service to the home, and a holding action had to be maintained until power was finally cut and the flames extinguished.
