A flurry of working fire incidents in the space of several hours kept the second battalion and surrounding companies on the go Friday evening, December 2nd.

December 2, 2005

As chilly gusting winds swept thru D.C., the first of three incidents was dispatched as a box alarm for reported fire from the roof at 131 Duddington Place S.E., on Capital Hill. Firefighters arrived on the scene with smoke showing from the roof of the two story occupied row house.

Making their way to the roof, units discovered that earlier roofing work had ignited a blaze that was burrowing in the top of the dwelling. Firefighters quickly opened up and exposed the flames before the cockloft could become involved, and checked exposure "D" for extension. Finding none, the fire was placed under control.

Some of the companies from Duddington Place had just settled back into their firehouse routine when another box was sounded for 408 "F" Street N.E. Engine 3 arrived at that scene to report smoke showing from an english basement in an occupied row dwelling. The cause, as it turned out, was a fireplace where the evening's high winds had blown down the flu and forced the flames out into the room. The small blaze was quickly contained, and most units placed in service.  The third and most serious of the trio of fires occurred in yet another two story dwelling, this one frame, at 112 6th Street S.E.

A box alarm assignment was investigating a light haze in the adjacent home at 110 6th Street, when a firefighter on the roof shouted down that the smoke was originating from Exposure "D". Units quickly gained entry into the actual fire building and found flames spreading along the flooring on the first floor of the home. A Working Fire Dispatch was sounded as firefighters used saws to open up and check for fire extension. This blaze was contained without any injuries.
