Apartment Fire 5010 A Street S.E.

DC firefighters battled a working fire in a far Southeast garden apartment building Saturday evening, February 26th.

The flames broke out in a top floor apartment at 5010 A Street SE shortly before 6 pm. A working fire dispatch was requested.

The blaze was contained to the original fire apartment. There were no injuries

Metro Rescue Alarm 200 N.Y. Avenue N.E.

A major disaster was averted during Fridays high winds that blew over a steel pole onto the Metro rail right of way.

A train heading towards Union Station was confronted with a steel pole that was leaning onto the right of way, luckily the train operator saw the pole and stopped the train just as it hit the top side of the car causing damage to the car.. One person was transported to the hospital from the incident.


High Winds Rip Off Apartment Roof In N.E.

In another of several incidents involving Fridays high winds , Truck 13 was dispatched to 4400 Quarles Street N.E. to investigate a roof that had possibly blown off the building.

Truck 13 arrived on the scene and requested the collapse task force due to the magnitude of the incident. A large portion of the roof had blown off the building displacing approximately 60 residents .The south mass casualty bus was also called to assist with the evacuation. The incident was cleared in approximately two hours.


Room Off 1248 Howison Place S.W.

DC Firefighters responded Thursday evening on a box for the report of a house on fire at 1248 Howison Place S.W.

Upon arrival units reported a working fire on the second floor in the rear. A Working Fire was sounded and the fire was knocked down a short time after.


One Trapped 300 36th Street N.E.

At 2335 hours, units with the 2nd Battalion were alerted to the 300 block of 36th Street, NE for a house with one reported trapped.

E27 responded first due and arrived on side Alpha of a two story middle of the row with fire showing from the second floor. The trapped subject was being pulled out by neighbors as units arrived.

Two rooms were found off on the second floor and quickly extinguished. The Box was held with one and one in 30 minutes. E27 operated for just over two hours assisting investigators.


Medic 2 Involved In MVA With One Trapped

Monday afternoon Medic 2 was involved in an MVA with 1 trapped at North Capitol and Rock Creek Church Rd N.W. while en route to the hospital with a patient onboard.

The rescue assignment was requested by the crew of Medic 2, Rescue Squad 2 with support from Engine 17 and Truck 6 did the extraction with the Amkus tools.The occupant of the car involved was transported to MEDSTAR with non-life threatening injuries.


Pin Job 3rd & Bryant St's N.W.

Four people were injured and extrication was required after a car ran into a wall on the Howard University campus Sunday morning, February 20th.

Units were dispatched to 3rd and Bryant Streets NW in the pre-dawn hours and quickly located the one vehicle accident.

Rescue Squad 1 performed extrication and all four occupants were transported to area trauma centers.


Mutual Aid To Montgomery County

On what was an extremely busy day for jurisdictions around the region with many multiple alarm fires in Montgomery County and Prince George's County, DCFD transferred five engine companies , Engines 24, 28, 4, 17 and E62 to Montgomery and Prince Georges counties.

In Montgomery County E-24 and E-28 were busy with numerous calls and brush fires. Pictured above Engine 24 responded to 16th Street and Spring Street in Silver Spring where they had a large amount of brush along the CSX tracks and requested additional resources which brought DC Engine 28, Fort Dietrick Engine 754 and Montgomery Tower 719.


House Fire 2809 Channing Street N.E.

DC Firefighters responded this evening for the report of a house on fire in the 2800 Block of Channing St. N.E..

Upon arrival, units reported heavy smoke and fire showing from a single family dwelling. The fire which was mainly in the rear of the home extended to the second floor and through the roof.

A working fire dispatch was sounded and the fire placed under control quickly.

A fire that originated in the kitchen caused heavy damage to a Southeast DC home on Friday afternoon, February 18th.

The blaze erupted at 4611 Hillside Road SE in a two story, brick occupied semi-detached dwelling. Fire was showing from the first floor on the B and C sides, and a working fire dispatch was requested.

The incident was contained via an aggressive interior attack. No injuries were reported.



Burn Foundation Bowling Tournament

The DC Firefighters Burn Foundation hosted the 6th annual Firefighters' and Nurses' Bowling Tournament on Thursday, February 10 at Bowlmor Lanes in Bethesda. Once again this event sold out in less than a week with 34 teams competing. This event has become our most popular fundraiser over the past several years and has drawn participants from not only from DCFD but also nurses from Children’s Hospital, Georgetown, and Washington Hospital Center. This year we also had 3 teams from Loudoun County Fire participating in the event.

The winning team for the 6th year in a row was made up of Charlie Florence, Clarence Rucker, Lee Matthews, Sharon Morgan, Robert Duckett, and Eugene Marshall. We would like to thank all of our sponsors and participants for helping us to once again raise over $10,000. We look forward to seeing everyone at next year’s event.

Fire At The Ronald Reagan Building

A fire in DC's largest structure brought a box alarm assignment and snarled morning rush hour traffic Tuesday, February 14th.

The fire erupted in the hood of a fast food restaurant at the cavernous Ronald Reagan Building, 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. around 7 AM.


The flames quickly spread into the duct work, and it took a long and labor intensive effort to root out and extinguish the blaze. There were no reported injuries.


Amtrak Diesel Train Fire At Ivy City

Early Saturday evening DC Firefighters were dispatched to the Amtrak Ivy City Rail yard for the report of a "Diesel" fire at that facility.

As Engine 26 arrived on the scene it was reported they had a diesel train engine with heavy smoke and fire showing. Companies made their initial attack and due to the very unique construction of the engine and large amount of fuel involved additional resources were called for. Water Supply Task Force, Foam Unit Task Force, Hazmat unit and Rescue 1.

The initial alarm was a triple local. The incident lasted approximately 2 hours .



Fire Outside National History Museum

A towering column of smoke over the National Mall signaled a blaze at a building on the Natural History Museum grounds Monday, February 7th.

The fire involved a 30x100 one story structure, adjacent to the museum, housing the heating and cooling systems for the facility. Originally a local alarm around 7:40 AM for smoke in the area, the hazmat box was filled and a working fire dispatch was sounded.

Firefighters were able to mount an interior attack, knocking down heavy fire involving the cooling towers. However, large amounts of insulation continued to burn for a considerable amount of time, and required extensive overhaul.


House Fire 4904 Georgia Avenue N.W.

Super Bowl viewing in Fourth Battalion fire stations came to a quick end when fire erupted in a Georgia Avenue building on Sunday evening, February 6th.

The Blaze was reported around 7:30 PM in a two story, detached frame dwelling at 4904 Georgia Avenue NW. Flames had possession of the first floor and heavy smoke was pushing from both stories when firefighters arrived.

A working fire dispatch was sounded as an aggressive interior attack was instituted. The fire was contained with minor extension to the second floor, and no injuries were reported.

Scott Firefighter Stairclimb 2011

The Scott Firefighter Stairclimb is a race up the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle. Our department team will be running up 69 flights of stairs in full fire gear and SCBA. While we welcome the challenge, we are doing this to help fight blood cancers. All proceeds benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
