Third
Battalion Firefighters Receive Thanks From Local Construction Co.
April 20, 2003 A local Construction Company recently showed their appreciation to third battalion firefighters for a job well done. Two recent fires have slowed down the progress of new townhouses being constructed in southeast. On March 25th at 06:07 hours units were dispatched for the house fire at 1840 Alabama Ave. SE. Fire in the flooring with extension into the walls seemed like a routine house fire. Those thoughts quickly changed as two firefighters fell through the first floor into the basement. Firefighter Doering ( E-32 ) and Lt. Zbikowski ( E-15 ) were lucky to escape with no serious injuries, showing just how dangerous a firefighters job is and how quickly things can go wrong. Just a few weeks later units were dispatched at 01:34 hours to 1816 Alabama Ave. SE for the house. First arriving units reported a working fire which ended with a Second Alarm being sounded due to heavy fire conditions. Firefighters again encountered weak flooring in the fire building but were able to attack parts of the fire from attached exposures. All Companies that were on the original Box Alarm were presented with plaques of appreciation. Firefighter Doering pictured above accepts a plant as a special thank you for his efforts on the scene.
