February 9, 2003

While in service with the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department, during the early hours of Saturday morning February 8th, 2003, Firefighter-Technician Jon B. Covey of Truck Company 3, Platoon #3 was seriously burned on his face and both hands while on the scene of a multiple alarm structure fire in Dale City, Virginia.  Jon was assisting in the evacuation of residents from a heavily involved retirement community complex.
Jon was transported to Med-Star via helicopter and later transferred to the Burn Unit of the Washington Hospital Center under the care of Dr. Jordan, the burn unit director. At this time, it is anticipated that his stay will last approx. seven days. Jon is located in wing “3E” and is accepting limited phone calls and visitors at this time.  On behalf of Jon, the officers and members of  Engine Company 16 & Truck Company 3 along with the members of the O.W.L.V.F.D. would like extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of those that have already offered support and “Get Well” wishes to Jon and his family.  It is greatly appreciated! Jon’s return to full duty will take a long and arduous road and will require the help and support of his family, friends and co-workers during the extended period of treatment and therapy.  To this end, a request has been made that any members of the D.C.F.D. that can work “Day Off Trades” for Jon, please contact the Office of the 6th Battalion Fire Chief to schedule same and help continue one of the greatest traditions of the District of Columbia Fire Department, helping a fellow Firefighter.
