Chilean Ambassador's Home Catches Fire

September 19, 2009 by Vito Maggiolo

One civilian had to be taken to the hospital following a blaze at the Chilean ambassador's home on embassy row Saturday afternoon, September 19th.

The fire erupted around 2:30 PM in a stove hood inside the large three story structure at 2305 Massachussetts Avenue NW. A working fire dispatch was requested after it was determined that flames had also entered the ductwork.

Although the fire was quickly brought under control, one of the occupants suffered from smoke inhalation and was transported by FEMS to an area hospital.

You Don't just give , you give from the heart...And it makes all the difference.

May God Bless each of you- From: Sue Barchers

To Everyone in the D.C.F.D. - active and retired,

I apologize for taking so long to write you all, but it has been difficult in so many ways, losing Chuck suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 57.  I have needed a longtime, and "now" can cope better with and begin moving beyond the many challenges I have had without Chuck in my life.

Chuck was truly happy pursuing his goals and dreams he always had for when he retired. It is sad that he only had 1 year to enjoy retirement.  I was overwhelmed with gratitude and appreciation with how much so many of you respected and thought of Chuck, by reading the messages on the website, seeing so many of you traveling a long distance, along with the exceptional and dedicated D.C.F.D. Pipe and Drums coordinated by Chief Shultz.  Being given his retired fire helmet by Scott Sefton and given the "Remembrance Bible", and last but not least, contributing to the Relief Fund for me, that helped more than you will ever know with immediate expenses and future bills that I was able to pay with your kindness and generosity.

During that time of grief, I felt the D.C. Fire Department was my second family, being here for me and my family in every way to help.  You all, have my everlasting thanks, there is not a day that goes by that I do not think of you all without emotion.  But I thank " Gods Strength" for making it easier for me.  Now I can write to you with pride instead of with emotions that kept me from writing to most people, especially the D.C.F.D.

A very special "Thank You " goes to BFC John Faulkner for coordinating every detail with the D.C. Fire Department.  He managed everything without being asked to and gave up so much of his own personal time for Chuck and our family, a true blessing.  Also a special "Thank You" goes to Captain Mark Sweitzer for being John's assistant and helping with all the details and giving up alot of his time for us.  To everyone else that helped with any details, I thank you.

Chuck was always dedicated to his job of 30-1/2 years.  He worked his best with every responsibility expected of him.  He made friends and had the privilege to work with alot of you at sometime during his career.  When you ever think about Captain Chuck Barchers (Chuckie), remember "the good times".  I was very proud of Chuck and will always miss him.

Thank You,

Sue Barchers

September 12, 2009 by Vito Maggiolo

Both land and water units from DC Fire and EMS rushed to the Georgetown waterfront on Saturday afternoon, September 12, for a person in the Potomac River.

Firefighters arrived on the scene near the Georgetown Harbor complex to find that the victim had been fished from the river by a nearby boater. The patient was taken to Thompson’s boathouse, where advanced life support was immediately initiated.

A DC fireboat conducted a secondary search of the area, but no further victims were found.

Vito Maggiolo Receives Another Award

Vito Maggiolo, volunteer video photographer for DC Fire and EMS, has won second place in the TV News Story category of the International Association of Firefighters 2009 Media Awards Contest.

The story that won was titled “Mount Pleasant Street Fire.” It documents efforts by firefighters to rescue civilians and later themselves as maydays were sounded during the fire, which destroyed a large apartment building. The reporter was WUSA TV 9 correspondent Dave Statter.

The same story was given an “Award of Excellence” earlier this year in the video division general news category of the White House News Photographers annual “Eyes of History” contest.
