To Everyone in the D.C.F.D. - active and retired,
I apologize for taking so long to write you all, but it has been difficult in so many ways, losing Chuck suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 57. I have needed a longtime, and "now" can cope better with and begin moving beyond the many challenges I have had without Chuck in my life.
Chuck was truly happy pursuing his goals and dreams he always had for when he retired. It is sad that he only had 1 year to enjoy retirement. I was overwhelmed with gratitude and appreciation with how much so many of you respected and thought of Chuck, by reading the messages on the website, seeing so many of you traveling a long distance, along with the exceptional and dedicated D.C.F.D. Pipe and Drums coordinated by Chief Shultz. Being given his retired fire helmet by Scott Sefton and given the "Remembrance Bible", and last but not least, contributing to the Relief Fund for me, that helped more than you will ever know with immediate expenses and future bills that I was able to pay with your kindness and generosity.
During that time of grief, I felt the D.C. Fire Department was my second family, being here for me and my family in every way to help. You all, have my everlasting thanks, there is not a day that goes by that I do not think of you all without emotion. But I thank " Gods Strength" for making it easier for me. Now I can write to you with pride instead of with emotions that kept me from writing to most people, especially the D.C.F.D.
A very special "Thank You " goes to BFC John Faulkner for coordinating every detail with the D.C. Fire Department. He managed everything without being asked to and gave up so much of his own personal time for Chuck and our family, a true blessing. Also a special "Thank You" goes to Captain Mark Sweitzer for being John's assistant and helping with all the details and giving up alot of his time for us. To everyone else that helped with any details, I thank you.
Chuck was always dedicated to his job of 30-1/2 years. He worked his best with every responsibility expected of him. He made friends and had the privilege to work with alot of you at sometime during his career. When you ever think about Captain Chuck Barchers (Chuckie), remember "the good times". I was very proud of Chuck and will always miss him.
Thank You,
Sue Barchers
