At 1:55 PM, Fire & EMS responded for the building fire in the 5000 block of Central Ave., SE.
As the box alarm units arrived, they received information that people were trapped in the building from which heavy fire conditions were evident. An aggressive search for possible victims inside proved negative, and firefighters are credited with a quick knockdown on what was a very serious fire. Damage was evident to four units, and several people were displaced.
Two people were evaluated on the scene but were not transported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

| Metro Tunnel Box Alarm In NW |

A burning cross tie in the metro tunnel between Woodley Park and Cleveland Park stations brought a large contingent of firefighters to the scene on Tuesday, October 28th.
A metro tunnel box alarm was sounded shortly after 6p, and first arriving units found a smoke condition in the Cleveland Park Station. Power was shut down, enabling firefighters to proceed down track 1 and extinguish the small blaze.

Engine 16 and Tower 3 responded at 10:20 AM for the automatic fire alarm sounding in the office building, 2000 L St., NW.
When firefighters made their way up through the eight story building, they discovered heavy smoke conditions on the penthouse level. As they searched the source, the box alarm was filled. As the units arrived on the scene, it was discovered that elevator motors had overheated and were the source of the smoke. Using dry chemical extinguishers, firefighters were able to put the fire out and work to ventilate the smoke.
About 500 people were evacuated from the building. There were no injuries reported.

| Fire Destroys Georgetown Restaurant |

A stubborn fire in a Georgetown eatery did severe damage to the building in the pre-dawn hours of Monday, October 20th.
The first alarm was sounded shortly after 5 AM for the Piccolo restaurant at 1068 31st Street N.W. Firefighters initially encountered heavy fire in the basement of the 2.5 story frame structure, and initiated an interior attack.
Flames quickly ate their way up the walls into both floors and attic, requiring a second alarm to be sounded. It took considerable effort to open up and expose all of the fire.
All hands worked for over an hour before the blaze was finally brought under control. Despite the intense effort, there were no injuries reported.

| Petworth Fire Contained To One Room |

An afternoon blaze damaged a row dwelling in the Petworth neighborhood on Sunday, October 19th.
Firefighters responding on a box alarm found flames on the second floor of the home at 4618 5th Street N.W., and a working fire dispatch was sounded.
The fire was confined to one room, and quickly controlled. There were no injuries.

D.C. firefighters had to put their extrication techniques to work following a collision in the 200 block of Florida Avenue N.E. on Saturday, October 11th.
A rescue assignment arrived on the scene to find a garbage truck versus passenger car, with two injured and one trapped.
Rescue Squad 1 utilized their tools to gain access to the injured driver. Both patients were transported to area hospitals.

| Metro Incident Allows For Use Of Newest Technology |

The 6th Battalion Chief made use of some of the latest technology while dealing with an incident at the Metro Center subway stop on Friday, October 10th.
Using a laptop computer and an electronic port at curbside, Chief Kevin Byrne and Sergeant Christopher Maggi were able to link into and monitor security cameras on the underground platform level. This gave them a real time view of what was happening at the incident scene below them.
The event was a metro station box alarm, for what turned out to be an arcing insulator on tracks alongside an upper level platform.

| Moderate Smoke Conditions For N.W. Compactor Fire |

D.C. firefighters battled a small but smoky fire in a Thomas Circle area apartment building on Tuesday evening, October 7th.
Units dispatched on a box alarm arrived to find moderate smoke conditions on the first floor level of the 10 story building at 1200 14th Street N.W. Searching for the source, they discovered fire burning in a compactor, with sprinkler activation.
Engine 16 stretched a hand line and extinguished the flames, while truck companies worked to clear the smoke.

| One Civilian Dead After 2 Alarm Fire in N.W. |

Dispatched at 4:49 PM on October 3, firefighters found fire and smoke coming from a second floor apartment at 1845 Harvard St., NW. As firefighters made their way into the fire apartment, they discovered the body of an adult male on the couch in the living room. The victim had been badly burned and was obviously deceased.
The fire was quickly extinguished with no other injuries to either civilians or firefighters. The cause remains under investigation, but a damage estimate was placed $43,200.

| 2 Alarm Blaze In West End Section of N.W. |

A two alarm blaze damaged several commercial buildings in the West End section of the city on Saturday, October 4th.
The blaze erupted in the noon hour at 1203 19th Street N.W., a three story commercial row building. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke spiraling from the roof of the structure, and a working fire dispatch was sounded.
It was determined that flames were burning in a shaftway, and had extended into the walls on the second and third floors and were threatening to extend into similar exposures.
A second alarm was sounded as units mounted an interior attack with several hand lines on all floors and the roof.
The fire burning in the walls and ceilings proved elusive, requiring extensive opening up before the blaze could be declared under control.
