| Two Firefighters Injured Battling Second Alarm |
November 14, 2009

Two firefighters suffered non life threatening burns and a civilian was transported for smoke inhalation as a two alarm blaze ripped through a home in the Brookland neighborhood.
Smoke was already visible in the distance when units were dispatched to 1923 Kearney Street N.E. around 3 PM on Saturday afternoon, November 14th. On arrival, heavy fire was showing from the first floor of the 2.5 story frame and stucco detached dwelling.
In the early stages of the fire, a mayday was sounded after a firefighter from Rescue Squad 2 tumbled from the rear door with his turnout gear steaming, and reported his partner might still be inside.
The order was given to evacuate the structure, and an accountability check was immediately initiated. Once it was determined that all members were safely outside, the interior attack was re-initiated and the fire knocked down.

| Unstable Building in S.E. Requires Demolition |
November 13, 2009
by Vito Maggiolo
Friday the 13th lived up to its reputation as a dangerously unstable building led to the evacuation of several homes and businesses in Southeast DC.
The cave-in assignment was dispatched around 2:30 PM to the 100 block of 15th Street SE for a building in danger of collapse. Firefighters arrived to find a two story commercial structure under renovation at 116 15th Street SE, with severe degradation of walls on exposures B and C sides.
Apparently caused by foundation work and recent heavy rains, the wall facing an alley on exposure B was bowed both downwards and outwards, with significant cracks. The building could also be seen separating from itself in the rear.
A safety perimeter and collapse zone was established, and occupied structures in the danger area were evacuated. Utilities were also controlled.
The Special Operations Battalion requested a building inspector to the scene, which was eventually turned over to Metropolitan Police to maintain the perimeter until demolition could take place.
