Hazmat Scare At Wardman Marriott

November 20, 2008 by Vito Maggiolo

The collapse of a government official, and subsequent symptoms among guests at a banquet, brought a hazmat assignment to the Wardman Marriott Hotel on Thursday evening, November 20th.

US Attorney General Michael Mukasey was speaking in the hotel ballroom when he suddenly went down at the podium. Units dispatched on the initial medical local found several others who had fainted or taken ill, and requested a hazmat assignment.

Medic 1 transported the Attorney General to an area hospital. It was than determined that the other patients were suffering from stress symptoms after watching the traumatic event, and all were treated on the scene, with at least one transported. The hazmat unit took readings, all of which were within normal limits.

At 8:05 AM, Fire & EMS was dispatched to the 1300 block of Quebec Place, NW for the report of the house fire.  When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire conditions throughout a two-story middle of the row house with extension through the roof.  Firefighters were able to get into the first floor, where it appears the fire started, but the discovery of holes in the floor required a steady and deliberate response on the interior of the structure.  Additionally, there were extremely cluttered, pack-rat conditions inside the home, which made for a difficult search operation.

After nearly an hour, the fire was brought under control with heavy damage to the fire building and significant extension to both adjoining homes.  A search of a rear enclosed porch area of the fire building uncovered the body of an obviously deceased adult.  Metropolitan Police were summoned at that time to engage a death investigation.  Firefighters operating on the first floor discovered a cage covered by debris.  Inside the cage was a large dog that was suffering from serious burns and smoke inhalation.  Firefighters removed the animal and began treatment outside the building, applying oxygen and blankets.  The dog was turned over to MPD Animal Control for further treatment.

During rehab, a firefighter was discovered to have abnormally high blood pressure and was transported for observation.

It was further discovered there were no working smoke alarms in the home.  Officials from the DC Fire & EMS Fire Prevention Division returned to the scene to canvass the neighborhood and install smoke alarms where necessary.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Tour Trolley Accident

November 14 , 2008 by Vito Maggiolo

A collison between a van and a loaded tour trolley left a number of people injured and created a hazmat situation on Friday night, November 14.

The propane powered tour vehicle was struck at the corner of 15th Street and Independence Avenue SW. The impact jolted the riders and caused a leak in the trolley's propane supply.

First arriving firefighters quickly evacuated the passengers and removed them a safe distance from the leaking gas. At the same time, protective lines were placed in position and the hazmat unit arrived to determine how to mitigate the leak.

Traige of the passengers resulted in eight being transported to area hospitals with minor trauma.

It was determined that the leak could not be easily controlled. Since the trolley was in a relatively isolated location, it was determined that the best course of action was to allow the tank to expend itself.
