May 18 , 2008 by Vito Maggiolo

Employees and residents of a senior citizens assisted care facility had to be evacuated after a car struck their building on Saturday night, May 17th.

Firefighters responding on a cave-in assignment around 9pm found an SUV that had accidently crashed into one wing of the complex at 5901 McArthur Boulevard N.W. There was a large crack in an outside wall and additional damage to an interior room.

Unsure of the building's structural integrity, first arriving companies began to remove occupants from the affected wing until the arrival of the cave-in task force.

Upon further evaluation, it was determined that the wall was not load bearing and the damage, although significant in appearance, was largely superficial. There were no injuries resulting from this incident

Water Rescue Turns Into A Recovery

May 9 , 2008 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

Units responded at 11:42 AM for the report of one in the water - on the property of the Navy Yard, 6th & M Streets, Southeast.

First arriving units encountered witnesses who said a man jumped in the channel that comes off the Anacostia River into the Navy Yard.  A surface search produced no visual of the man.  His hat was located at the point where he went into the water.

Metropolitan Police divers responded and, in conjunction with Fire & EMS rescue personnel, conducted a comprehensive search of the area.  After two hours of searching the area with no results, a cadaver dog from Fairfax County was utilized over the surface of the water.  After only a few moments, the dog alerted on an area over which the victim was eventually found.

The body was recovered and turned over to police.  An investigation into the incident remains open.

Heavy Fire Showing From The Rear

May 3 , 2008 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

Just after 7:00 PM, units responded for the 4100 block of Fessenden Street in Tenleytown for the report of a house on fire.

First arriving firefighters found heavy fire showing from the rear of the two-story wood frame home.  The back porch was completely engulfed, and it was evident that fire had extended to the interior of the building on both the first and second floors.

An aggressive interior attack extinguished the fire on the inside of the house, while firefighters working on the exterior also brought that portion of the fire under control quickly.

Witnesses reported hearing explosions, which may have been propane tanks on a grill venting.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Technical Rescue On Howard University Campus

May 3, 2008 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

A 59-year-old painter was rescued by Fire & EMS personnel today after he fell through a metal grate into the basement of a building on the Campus of Howard University.

The man was painting the exterior of Founders Librarary in the 500 block of Howard Place, Northwest, when the grate on which he was standing collapsed, and he fell approximately 25 feet into a concrete containment area which measured about 6 feet by 20 feet.

Rescue Squads One and Two combined through a Special Operations Command to reach the victim, stabilize him, and pull him to the surface using technical rescue techniques, ropes and pulleys.

Complicating the operation was the fact that the man weighs in excess of 300 pounds and that the area into which he fell was very small and movement was limited.  Firefighters were able to secure the man onto a flexible stretcher and raise him head first out of the hole, where he was treated by medics and quickly transported.

The cause of the accident was being investigated by Howard University officials.
