Van Fire in Adams Morgan

March 30, 2008 by Vito Maggiolo

The weekend late night action in Adams Morgan got a little hotter on Sunday, March 30, when a van erupted into flames in the 2300 block of Champlain Street N.W.

The bars were just closing when Engine 21 was dispatched for the vehicle fire. 21's crew made quick work of the blaze before it could extend to other automobiles parked adjacent.

The fire investigation team was requested to the scene to determine the cause of the fire, which gutted the vehicle.

Dupont Area Restaurant Duct Catches Fire

March 28, 2008 by Vito Maggiolo

Fire in a restaurant duct system forced the evacuation of a Dupont Circle area office building on Friday, March 28.

Smoke was filling the California Pizza Kitchen, on the first floor of 1250 Connecticut Avenue N.W.,  when box alarm units arrived around 3:30 in the afternoon. The source was found to be fire that originated in the wood burning stove, igniting creosote in the exhaust duct.

A working fire dispatch was sounded as firefighters opened up the ducting and checked to ensure that flames had not penetrated the walls or void spaces.

The fire was placed under control once it was confirmed there was no further spread.

Cyanide Scare in N.W.

March 24 , 2008 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

When units responded to assist MPD for what was reported to be a suicide Monday afternoon, they could not imagine the call would evolve into a massive HazMat response that would end with 13 people hospitalized for observation.

Engine 20 and Ambulance 20 responded at 4:40 PM to assist on the scene of an apparent suicide in the 4300 block of 36th Street, Northwest.  Firefighters found an obviously deceased male, but the means were unclear.  While they were on the scene, police uncovered information that a dangerous substance might be in the two-story single family home.  Police then summoned - through Special Operations - a hazardous materials response to investigate.

HazMat did discover the presence of a dangerous and potentially lethal substance in the home.  Because of the on-going police investigation, the identity of the substance cannot be specified at this time.  But officials were certain the community was never in any danger, and the substance was contained to the house.  The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine how the man died.

Because several Fire & EMS employees were initially exposed to the material, they were all transported for observation only.  No other civilians were injured.  A female civilian and a police officer were also transported for evaluation.

Stairwell Collapse in N.E.

March 22 , 2008 by Vito Maggiolo

A stairway in a state of potential collapse brought D.C. Fire special operations personnel to a Northeast townhome complex on Saturday afternoon, March 22.

The special operations battalion chief conducted the initial survey at the gated complex off Michigan Avenue and North Capital Street. He found a metal staircase that led to two addresses on Hawthorne Court had pulled away from its moorings, and was in a precarious condition.

The chief requested the cave-in task force to the scene, and they provided temporary shoring to allow residents to safely enter or exit their homes until permanent repairs could be made.

Apartment Fire in N.W.

March 21 , 2008 by Vito Maggiolo

Thick smoke filled the 9th floor of a West End high rise apartment building Friday night, March 21st, as D.C. firefighters battled a blaze there.

The box alarm was sounded around 8:40 PM for fire reported at 2440 Virginia Avenue N.W. Although there nothing visible from outside, units arrived on the 9th floor of the twelve story occupied building to find an apartment involved.

A working fire dispatch was sounded, as well as a request for a second rescue squad to help search the large number of apartments.

Despite the challenges, the blaze was confined to the apartment of origin, and there were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

A massive five alarm fire destroyed a Mount Pleasant neighborhood apartment building on March 12th, displacing approximately 200 residents and spreading to an adjacent church.

Firefighters arrived shortly before midnight to find fire in the basement and walls on the first and second floors of 3145 Mount Pleasant Street N.W., an extremely large, occupied, four story “H” style structure. A second alarm was quickly sounded as units began an interior attack and intensive search and rescue operation.

Despite these efforts, the flames continued to spread and conditions deteriorated. As the blaze intensified, firefighters continued to remove residents via portable ladders and thru the interior.

Fire began showing from several windows on the second floor, and the severe heat and smoke conditions led to at least one mayday and other distress reports from firefighters caught inside the large building. All those in trouble were located and safely removed, and the structure was ordered evacuated.

At this point, sheets of flames burst from all sides and thru the roof, as an exterior attack was mounted. Flying embers rained down on the neighborhood, and intense radiant heat ignited Exposure “C”, The Meridian Hill Baptist Church. Ultimately, a fifth alarm was sounded for Mount Pleasant Street and a third alarm for the church fire on 16th Street, making this event the largest fire since Kahn’s Department Store burned in 1979.

As a result, multiple mutual aid units either fought the two blazes or transferred into D.C. fire stations. These included companies from Montgomery and Prince Georges County, Maryland, and Arlington County, Virginia.

Despite the potential for serious injury or death, only one firefighter was hurt, and all civilians escaped unharmed.

Woman Falls Under Metro Bus

March 10 , 2008 by Vito Maggiolo

D.C. firefighters came to the aid of a woman who fell partially under a metrobus  on March 10th.

A technical rescue assignment was dispatched in the late afternoon for reports of a person pinned under the bus in the 400 block of “H” Street N.W. Units arrived to find the woman lying partially under the bus, which was not moving when she slipped beneath it.

Rescue Squad 1 chocked the bus to prevent any movement, and worked with EMS personnel to stabilize and remove the victim, who was transported to an area hospital with relatively minor injuries.

Construction Worker Falls Into Concrete Bucket

March 10 , 2008 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

Fire & EMS responded at 1:51 PM for the report of an injured construction worker on the roof of a seven story building under construction.

Engine 3 arrived to the location just south of their firehouse – on D Street – between First Street and New Jersey Avenue, Northwest.  They discovered that a 45-year-old man had been struck by a cement bucket – actually fell into the bucket – and then was transported about 40 feet across the construction site and was stopped only when his co-workers alerted supervisors that the man had been struck.

Personnel on site were able to get the man out of the cement bucket.  Firefighters and EMS providers were able to assess the man has having at least one broken arm and was in need of transport.  Utilizing an on-scene crane, the man was first stabilized in a stokes basket then lowered to the street, accompanied by firefighter Colin St. Clair.  Once on the ground,  medics were able to take over care and transport to MedStar.

Fire and EMS Crews Respond to Tragic Incidents

March 3 , 2008 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

Just after 11 AM, Engine 21 responded for a pedestrian who was reported to have been struck in the parking garage of an apartment building in the 2100 block of Massachusetts Avenue, Northwest.  When they arrived, they found an approximately 16-month-old boy who had apparently been run over by an SUV.  He had suffered massive head and thoracic injuries,

CPR was administered immediately and taken over by the crew of Medic 2.  He was transported to Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.  Fire & EMS activated the Department’s Critical Incident Stress Debriefing team to counsel those involved.  MPD was investigating the circumstances of the accident.

As units were transporting the little boy, a dispatch was sounded for the MVA – and found this five-vehicle accident on New Jersey Avenue, Northwest just south of H Street.

Capitol Police had chased a car to this location where it collided with a transport van carrying two elderly residents.  The van flipped over, and the suspect car slammed into four other vehicles before stopping in the Southbound lanes of New Jersey Avenue.  Fire & EMS crews extricated the driver and both patients.  All three were transported to the Washington Hospital Center and were being treated for what were described as minor injuries.

Basement Fire 823 Randolph Street N.W.

March 1 , 2008 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

Dispatched at 10:14 AM, firefighters found smoke showing on arrival at this two-story end of the row house.  Firefighters reported cluttered conditions inside the home, especially the basement where most of the fire was located.

A fast entry and suppression operation contained the fire to the basement.

It was learned that there were no working smoke alarms in the building, and likely led to a delay in the fire being discovered and subsequently reported, allowing it to spread significantly throughout the basement.  Ironically, DC Fire & EMS’ SAVU (Smoke Alarm Verification and Utilization) event was happening at the same time the fire was reported.  Thankfully, no one was injured, but one person was displaced.  The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
