Dozens of participants in a Boy Scout parade required medical attention after marching in 100+ degree heat on Sunday, July 25th.
Despite extensive preparations, the searing heat began to take its toll on the march from 7th to 17th Street along Constitution Avenue. Numerous participants began exhibiting heat related symptoms as the reached the end of the parade route.
As existing EMS resources began to become overwhelmed, a Mass Casualty Incident was declared, bringing the South EMS Task Force, Rehab Unit, and additional transport units and supervisory personnel.
In addition, Engine 23 set up a cooling station using a fog nozzle on their apparatus. That effort supported existing misting tents.
Dozens of patients were evaluated and several transported. |

During a very fierce summer storm that brought heavy winds and rain, units including companies who had to really respond some distance, such as Engine 33 and 16, were dispatched to the 2514 22nd street N.E. address in the first battalion for the report of a house fire.
As companies approached the scene, fire was visible from the roof. A working fire dispatch with the canteen unit responded. This was really a very busy day as the storm sent dozens of trees down, many on cars and houses and units were kept busy throughout the day and night.

DCFD units were dispatched to 1612 W Street S.E for the report of a house with people trapped. Units arrived on the scene of a large 2 1/2 story wood frame with smoke showing.
During the primary search 2 victims were rescued by members of Rescue Squad 1, Truck 16, Truck 7 and Engine 32. CPR was initiated. The layout, size and contents of the house made it very difficult for units to contain the fire and a 2nd alarm was sounded.
Units also had the extreme heat to deal with which made the importance of the REHAB unit that much greater and was certainly welcomed by all members. Despite those valiant efforts of all who responded, one victim did pass away at the hospital. |
