DC firefighters faced their second major challenge in less than 24 hours as a two alarm blaze burned thru the top floor of a vacant Northeast apartment building on Thursday, July 30th.
Heavy fire was already showing from the 100x100 “H” type building at 329 Rhode Island Avenue N.E. as Engine 12 rolled out of their quarters a block away. An interior attack was initiated, but units were forced to withdraw early on as the roof began to collapse.
An outside attack was mounted using several ladder pipes, Tower 3, and large diameter hand lines. The flames eventually ate their way throughout the entire cockloft of the structure.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

A massive two alarm blaze in a Spring Valley mansion destroyed the home of a well known Washingtonian on Wednesday evening, July 29th.
The fire, at 3022 Chain Bridge Road NW, gutted the residence of Peggy Cooper Cafritz, a former head of the Washington school board and benefactor of the arts. Her priceless art collection was also consumed by the flames.
Box alarm units arrived to find heavy fire involving a large portion of the first floor in the three story detached frame mansion. An initial interior attack made good headway against the blaze, but a sudden loss of water pressure turned the tide against firefighters.
Without an adequate water supply, companies had to withdraw from the structure, and flames roared into the upper floors and attic. An extensive water relay had to be set up to deliver a sufficient volume for ladder pipes and other large diameter streams.
The battle raged on for several hours before the blaze was finally brought under control. One firefighter was transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

DC firefighters safely evacuated scores of elderly and infirm residents from their burning apartment building in the Petworth neighborhood Friday evening, July 17th.
The two alarm blaze erupted around 8:45 pm in a three story apartment building at 5336 Colorado Avenue NW. First alarm companies found heavy smoke rolling from the roof and eaves, and discovered fire raging throughout the cockloft.
An aggressive interior attack was mounted, utilizing multiple hand lines to hit the flames from holes opened in the top floor ceiling by the truck companies. Roof work was made difficulty by the inaccessibility of the structure to aerial ladders.
These tactics were successful, and the fire was brought under control within an hour.
