Busy Day For Firefighters

Click For Alan's Slideshow

January 21, 2009 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

DC firefighters dealt with a series of serious fires this morning, including a fatal two-alarm fire on North Capitol Street, NW.

That fire was dispatched 7:21 AM, and firefighters were confronted with heavy fire and smoke conditions in the two-story rowhouse in the 2200 block of North Capitol Street, NW.  An elderly man who had been inside the home told firefighters two people were trapped.

An aggressive entry into the burning building and search found a 14-year-old boy who was unconscious and in cardiac arrest.  He was immediately removed, and CPR was begun.  As the boy was being transported, his pulse was restored.  He is still listed in critical condition at a local hospital, where doctors are working to save his life.

A further search of the building discovered the obviously dead body of an adult female on the first floor.  Her body was left in place for the investigation, but the teenager and the elderly man were both transported to local hospitals.  The elderly man had what was described as mild smoke inhalation.

MPD and Fire Investigators are on the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire.  It is unknown whether smoke alarms worked in the building.

At 8:01 AM, Fire & EMS units were dispatched for another report of a house on fire in the unit block of Randolph Place, NW - near the North Capitol tragedy.  First arriving firefighters found heavy fire coming from the attic and roof of the two-story rowhouse.  A second alarm was sounded.  Firefighters were able to contain this fire quickly with no injuries to either civilians or firefighters.

Then, at 8:18 AM, Fire & EMS responded for the report of fire in the Giant Food Store, 1414 8th Street, NW.  There, it was discovered that fire had spread through ductwork inside the building.  The fire was extinguished quickly, and there are no injuries.

The causes of each of these serious fires remain under investigation.

Chief Dennis Rubin had high praise for firefighters who responded in very cold conditions to deal with three serious incidents happening simultaneously.  A 'Return to the Scene' smoke alarm event was being planned for the area around where the fatal fire occurred.

Resident Rescued From N.W. House Fire
District of Columbia Fire Department

January 18, 2009 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

DC Firefighters are being praised today for their performance in the rescue of a Northwest DC woman from a house fire last night.

Units responded at 10:32 PM for the report of fire coming from the first floor of the two-story rowhouse in the 1800 block of Kilbourne Place, Northwest.

Firefighters arrived in three minutes to begin battling the blaze, which was evident from the front porch and seemed to be extending to the second floor.  An aggressive entry into the building and subsequent fire suppression operation began putting the fire down quickly; members located a 70-year-old woman on the second floor - unconscious and in respiratory arrest.

She was quickly removed from the building, as firefighters assisted with respirations.  Though she had a pulse, it was unclear how long she was unable to breathe on her own.  She was delivered to a local hospital in critical condition.

Fire & EMS Chief Dennis L. Rubin had the highest praise for the firefighters who participated in the rescue.

"Citizens should be proud of the dedication and true professionalism of their firefighters," said Rubin.  "Their actions in Mt. Pleasant last night illustrate the highest standards in firefighting."

The ensuing investigation revealed the home had no working smoke alarms.

DC Fire & EMS plans a 'Return to the Scene' event in the near future, where firefighters will go door-to-door checking for the presence and operability of residential smoke alarms.  Firefighters will also install smoke alarms free of charge, if necessary.

District residents can get a free smoke alarm installed in their home.  Just visit your local firehouse or call (202) 673-3331.

N.E. House Fire Claims 6 Lives

January 1, 2009 by Vito Maggiolo

2009 began with a horrific start for D.C. Fire and EMS as a raging house fire took the lives of six people.

It was shortly after seven on New Year's morning when multiple calls were received for a fire at 10th and Jackson Streets NE. Firefighters arrived to find flames engulfing the basement of 1014 Jackson Street.

There were already residents in need of rescue on the two story detached home's front porch roof, and several others trapped inside. Firefighters raced into the blazing home as others raised ladders to those visible.

The fire in the balloon frame structure spread upwards throughout the home, and a second alarm was requested. Flames were so intense that the siding of exposure "D" was melted off and Engine 12's attack line burned thru.

There were nine people in the dwelling, and six were removed through the valiant efforts of first alarm units. It took about 20 minutes to knock down the blaze.

The cause of the fire has been attributed to an electrical malfunction in the basement.
