Single Family Home With Smoke Showing From Roofline
February 21 , 2008 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO
At 11:30 AM, Fire & EMS responded for the house fire – 3219 11th Place, Southeast. First arriving units found smoke coming from the roof line of a single family home.
Once firefighters were positioned on the roof, it became clear the problem was related to an electrical issue at the point where feeder cables came into the house. This was going to develop into an extended operation because firefighters had to wait for Pepco to respond in order to take the power down to the residence. Even though utilities were cut off at the individual boxes, the lines bringing power to the house were still energized.
To expedite the firefighting operation, members of Truck 16 were able to chop pieces of the burning roof off and let them fall to the ground, where water was then applied. There were no injuries reported, and Pepco responded within 45 minutes to cut off power and allow the operation to continue. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Due to previous water supply problems in this area of the District, the Firefighting Deputy Chief requested that three additional Water Supply Engines be added to the Working Fire Assignment. As the fire started to extend through the cockloft and penetrated the roof, the Incident Commander requested that a Second Alarm be struck.
DCFD units mounted an extremely aggressive interior attack and had the bulk of the fire knocked down within the first 30 minutes of the incident. A large diameter hose lay was put into place to augment the area's water system, but the line was not charged. Units continued to work the scene, assisting fire investigators and overhauling.

Building Fire With Multiple Explosions
February 6 , 2008 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO
Dispatched at 7:17 PM on Feb. 6th for the building fire with multiple explosions, this fire next door to Engine 24 presented firefighters with several challenges.
Heavy fire was visible from the roof as firefighters approached the scene, but they had to move cautiously because explosions were still happening, due to flammable materials stored in the auto repair shop. An interior attack initially knocked the fire down.
Ventilation on the roof was swift and complete; however, new fire was discovered in the basement, which causes smoke conditions to re-emerge. Firefighters quickly moved to extinguish the fire. There were no injuries. The cause, while not being specific, was listed as accidental. Damage was placed at $150,000.

Building Collapse 700 Quincy Street N.E.
February 1 , 2008 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO
At 4:27 PM, Fire & EMS’ Special Operations and Battalion 4 were dispatched along with the Cave In Task Force to examine a building which suffered a partial collapse – in the 700 block of Quincy Street, Northwest off New Hampshire Avenue.
First arriving units found an end of the row home, the left side of which had completely collapsed, and the rear of the building was caving in. After establishing a perimeter, firefighters conducted a search from the outside. A shoring operation was established, which involved wooden braces being erected along the failing sides of the home.
After that process was complete, firefighters conducted a more complete search closer to the property. Satisfied there were no people trapped, Fire & EMS turned the scene over to EMA and DCRA for further action. It appears the home was vacant.
