Shelter Fire 425 2nd Street N.W. |

Scores of homeless residents were evacuated after fire broke out at the Mitch Snyder shelter on the final day of 2010.
Units were dispatched to the large, three story structure, at 425 2nd Street NW, around 9:45 AM, and found smoke coming from a wall on the first floor.
A working fire dispatch was sounded as firefighters began opening up and exposing hidden fire. Additional lines were placed protectively on the upper floors.
The flames were contained to the first floor without injury. |

Activated sprinklers prevented what could have been a serious blaze at the DC Superior Courthouse Thursday, December 30th.
A box alarm assignment was dispatched to the building at 500 Indiana Avenue NW around 6:15 AM. When firefighters reached the 6th floor, which is under renovation, they found moderate to heavy smoke conditions, and a working fire dispatch was requested.
A further search discovered a pile of burning cardboard boxes, with sprinklers holding the fire. It was quickly contained and extinguished. |
House Fire 5225 Manning Place N.W. |

DC Firefighters responded for a house fire at 5225 Manning Place N.W., first arriving units reported smoke showing. There was found to be fire on the first floor with extention to the second floor and roof area, with extremely heavy smoke conditions.
A Second Alarm was sounded with the Water Supply Task Force assigned as a precaution. The fire was placed under control in about 30 minutes, the canteen unit with Mr. Walter Gold, Steve Bobby and E were also on the scene supporting the firefighters on an extremely cold and windy afternoon. |

A woman has died in an apartment fire in the Dupont Circle area of Northwest Washington, firefighters had a hard time entering her home because of large amounts of clutter.
The fire broke out about 11 p.m Sunday in a second-floor apartment located at 1731 S Street N.W. A woman in the apartment was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. The apartment was described as a "hoarding situation."
The fire was confined to the apartment of origin, no one else was injured or displaced. The cause of the fire was discarded smoking materials. |

Lt. Joe Rainwater and the crew of Rescue Squad 1 after a house fire at 813 10th St. N.E. on 12/26/10.
Lt. Rainwater will retire at the end of this month after faithfully serving the citizens of the District of Columbia for 30 years.
Congratulations Joe on a job well done and a great career.
Story: A fire started by a renovation project caused about $600,000 in damage to three rowhouses in northeast Washington, but no one was injured.
D.C. fire and EMS spokesman Pete Piringer says the fire started just before 10 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 800 block of 10th Street. Piringer says as firefighters were entering one home, smoke caused an explosion that blew out a window in an adjacent home and also caused the porch to collapse. |

Three Alarm School Fire In N.W |

The three-alarm fire at the Takoma Educational Center on Wednesday was accidental and caused by the improper use of a torch.
The fire at 7010 Piney Branch Rd NW left more than $2 million worth of damage. The fire damaged a number of classrooms. One firefighter was injured but no one else was hurt.
First units arrived to find heavy fire on the second and third floors of the school, with fire coming through the roof. No students were in the school because it was closed for the holidays.
DC Fire and EMS spokesman Pete Piringer said damage will be heavy. Piringer said a second alarm was dispatched because of the size of the school, and the call for third alarm was precautionary. Units responding to the third alarm staged nearby. Piringer also said it looked like renovation work was being done in the area of the fire.

Sergeant Rusty Anderson Retires After 25 |

Sergeant Roger L. "Rusty" Anderson retired on December 18th, 2010 after 25 years of dedicated service to the citizens of The District of Columbia. Rusty's assignments over his career included 17 Engine, Rescue Squad No.1, and The Firefighting Deputy's Aide on #3 Platoon.
The members of Engine Co. No. 2, Rescue Squad No.1, and The Firefighting Deputy's Office wish Rusty a happy and healthy retirement. A dinner was held in his honor. Many members both active and retired attended to celebrate his retirement and wish him well with his future endeavors.
Thank You to all members both active and retired that attended Rusty's dinner to wish him well. Here's to a happy and healthy retirement!

| Apartment Building 3017 G Street S.E. |

One firefighter suffered injuries after falling through the floor at the scene of a working fire in Southeast DC on Sunday, December 19th.
The blaze erupted around midnight in a two story apartment building at 3017 G Street SE. Flames were found burning in the walls and floors on the first floor, and extending up to the second floor and attic.
A working fire dispatch was sounded as firefighters worked to expose and extinguish the hidden fire, while also battling a heavy smoke condition.
It took over 30 minutes before the incident could be declared under control. |
Kenneth Ellerbe To Head Department |

Mayor-elect Vincent Gray announced Thursday the appointment of Sarasota County, Fla., Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe as D.C.'s next fire chief. Ellerbe was a D.C. Fire and EMS deputy chief before he took the post in Florida.
Fire Chief Dennis Rubin announced in October that he would resign when Gray takes over. |

One person was injured after their vehicle overturned on an icy hill in Palisades on Thursday afternoon, December 16th.
DC units were dispatched to Chain Bridge Road and MacArthur Boulevard NW as the year’s first snowfall was coming to an end. First arriving units found a van on its side with an injured driver.
Rescue Squad 1 stabilized the vehicle and checked further for any other occupants. |

Wednesday evening, December 15th at the quarters of Rescue Squad 1 and Engine 2 , a gathering of legends many from the original "Big House" came to wish Deputy Chief Mike Reilly the very best on his retirement after serving 33 years in the DCFD.
There was an excellent meal prepared by the Squad, a few presentations, and of course the best part from the many friends he had on the job, great stories about Mike's career of course.
Although there were dozens of special people there, a special thanks to Capt. Tom Gregory, Capt. Larry Stommel ,"Slick" Gilkerson , Bernie DelCanton ,and the original "Zeke", all from the original BIG HOUSE crew, for making it a really unforgettable night.

The Shepherd Park home of Redskins Hall of Fame player Bobby Mitchell caught fire Wednesday morning.
D.C. firefighters could be spotted inside the attic tossing out furniture and charred furniture and clothing.
Mitchell’s wife, Gwen told 9NEWS NOW she and a daughter were inside the home on Locust Street NW when a neighbor spotted smoke coming from the attic. |
Fire On Tracks At Metro Center |

DC firefighters were called to the Metro Center subway station to deal with a fire on the track bed on Monday morning, December 13th.
A box alarm assignment was dispatched around 8 AM, and found smoke conditions on the Blue/green line portion of the complex station.
The fire was located on the bed of Track 1, and involved a lighting fixture and debris. Power was shut down so that firefighters could descend to the tracks and extinguish the small blaze. |

An elderly woman was burned while fighting a fire in her Georgetown home on Sunday, December 11.
The blaze involved the rear porch of the home in the 1600 block of 34th Street NW, a stone’s throw from the quarters of Engine 5. So close, in fact, that the engine laid out from the station hydrant.
The fire was quickly extinguished, and the victim was treated for her burns. |

Units with Battalion 4 were dispatched to Georgia Avenue and Rock Creek Church Rd NW for a reported Building Fire, FM9 on the scene reported fire showing. Units arrived to find a fire in the kitchen area of a two-story ordinary construction restaurant with extention to the duct work.
Command 4 was established and the Working Fire assignment was dispatched. Units made an aggressive interior attack and extinguished same within minutes.

December 10th at 1100 Hrs, the Anacostia Fire Department met other units in the Special Operations Division for lunch at Phillips to wish Special Ops BFC Wayne Benson a happy retirement.
Chief Benson is a mans man and a fireman's fireman, he has been with the Special Operations Division since it began and has done an outstanding job on number 2 platoon.
Congratulations Chief on your retirement and thank you again for your service to the DCFD. You will be greatly missed by all the members in the special operations battalion. Here's to a long and healthy retirement.

Partial Collapse on Kenyon St. N.W. |

High winds and heavy rain may have contributed to the collapse of a rear porch in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood on Wednesday, December 1st.
Firefighters arrived at 1809 Kenyon Street NW around 1:30 PM to find that the porch had pulled away from a two story dwelling under renovation.
Both exposures were checked, and the Special Ops search dog was utilized to search the wreckage for possible victims. The search proved negative.
