Story & Photos by Vito Maggiolo
An elusive fire hidden in the recesses of a high rise building gave DC firefighters a difficult time late Friday afternoon, December 18th.
The blaze, the result of an earlier restaurant duct fire that took place during the pre-dawn hours, involved rubber insulation in a narrow airwell on a second floor setback at 818 Connecticut Avenue NW. The material, which was hidden between the walls of two buildings and had been heated by the earlier duct fire, apparently smouldered thru out the day before it began to actively burn.
It took a box alarm assignment, assisted by a working fire dispatch and an additional engine and truck, some time to find and root out the flames.
There were no injuries resulting from this incident.

The sun was just setting as firefighters were dispatched for report of smoke in this two story row dwelling. There was nothing showing as units arrived, but it was quickly determined that fire escaping from a blocked flu had worked its way thru the floors and ceilings.

Story & Photos by Vito Maggiolo
A stubborn fire at the Government Printing Office kept firefighters busy on Friday, December 11.
Units were dispatched on a box alarm for fire reported on the first floor of the massive complex at 732 North Capital Street N.W. Firefighters arrived to find a fire out in machinery, but with indications that flames had spread into a paper chute extending upwards from the equipment.
Further investigation revealed that there was fire in a large enclosed bin on the third floor containing paper. This was interconnected with a second bin and associated ductwork.
There was very limited access, and firefighters were forced to cut a hole into the bin to get water onto the blaze. In addition, the ductwork needed to be controlled to prevent fire spread. December 6, 2009
Story by Vito Maggiolo
Fourth Battalion firefighters were confronted with a ferocious blaze that destroyed a row house in the wee hours of the morning on Sunday, December 6th.

Fire had engulfed the rear of the 2.5 story middle row under renovation, and conditions were so severe that a short interior attack was quickly abandoned and the second alarm was requested almost immediately.
