2 Civilians Die, in Morning House Fire in Upper N.W.
Slideshow From NBC4.com
Video Report From WJLA 7

December 24 , 2007 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

Units responded at 10:10 AM for the report of the house fire in the 3100 block of Oliver Street, Northwest.  First arriving units found fire coming from the front door and smoke visible from virtually every window on the first floor.  Information was supplied that two elderly, handicapped people might be trapped.  A fast interior entry discovered fire on the first floor – and fire in the basement.  Despite an aggressive entry and rescue operation, the body of an obviously deceased male was discovered on the first floor.  Firefighters ascended a smoke-filled stairway to the second floor, where they found an adult female, unconscious and unresponsive.  Life-saving techniques were applied immediately, but, unfortunately, she was pronounced dead a short time later at MedStar.

The victims were later identified as 88-year-old George O’Keefe and his wife, 80-year-old Gisela O’Keefe.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but fire investigators indicate the blaze was accidental, and it began in the basement.  A damage estimate was placed at $300,000.

December 23 , 2007 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

Units responded at 10:05 PM (12/23) for the apartment fire in the 1500 block of 19th Street, Southeast.  The first sizeup indicated smoke showing from the second floor; subsequent assessments indicated smoke and fire showing from the rear of the two-story brick apartment building.

Squad 3 advised an apartment was off on the second floor.  An aggressive attack brought the fire under control within 15 minutes with no injuries to either civilians or firefighters.  The cause was determined to be improper disposal of smoking materials.  Damage was placed at $50,000.

An off-duty D.C. firefighter is dead following a multiple vehicle crash in College Park Saturday afternoon.

Prince George's County authorities responded to the intersection of University Boulevard and Rhode Island Avenue around 3:18 p.m.

Accident reconstruction teams believe Lawrence Borders was travelling northbound in a black convertible along Rhode Island Avenue when he was struck by a Ford Bronco travelling westbound on University Boulevard. Borders' convertible then spun out of control striking a third car sitting at a traffic light on the southbound lanes of Rhode Island Avenue.

The intersection was closed in both directions for several hours while County police conducted their investigation.

Fire officials on scene tell ABC 7/NewsChannel 8's John Gonzalez that Borders worked with D.C.'s Hazmat unit and was a member of Engine 12 in Northeast.

D.C. Main Fire Dispatch said station flags with be flown at half-mast in memory of Borders.

Fuel Spill in The Washington Channel

OOPS! You forgot to upload swfobject.js ! You must upload this file for your gallery to work.

December 20 , 2007 by Vito Maggiolo Additional Photos Courtesy of Alan Etter DCFD PIO

D.C. Fire and EMS joined forces with a host of other federal and local agencies to deal with a heating oil spill into the Washington Channel on Thursday, December 20th.

The city’s fireboats were initially dispatched to investigate a slick in the water around 12th Street and Maine Avenue S.W., where several waterfront seafood barges are moored.

A considerable amount of # 2 oil was found in the waterway, and it determined to be coming from a spill at the federal heating plant at 13th and C Streets S.W. Several hundred gallons had leaked and made its way into the waterway thru storm drains.

Fireboats 2 and 3, assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority Fire Department, began deploying booms in an effort to contain the spill. They were joined by the Hazmat Unit and the Command vehicle, along with a number of fire department officials.

Containment operations continued throughout the day, and were to recommence on Friday.

2nd Alarm at the Red Roof Inn 500 H St. N.W.

December 19 , 2007 by Vito Maggiolo

D.C. firefighters battled their third second alarm of the day when flames erupted in a Red Roof Inn on H Street in the heart of Chinatown Wednesday night, December 19th.

The call went out around 9:45 P.M. for a reported building fire at 777 6th Street N.W. When box alarm companies arrived, they quickly determined that callers from 6th Street were actually seeing flames from the adjacent hotel at 500 H Street N.W.

Fire was showing from a window on the seventh floor of the nine story building, and a precautionary second alarm was sounded. Guests were evacuated as firefighters began to attack the blaze, which involved one room.

The fire was quickly controlled without injuries to either patrons or firefighters.

2nd Alarm 1209 13th St. N.W.

December 19 , 2007 by Vito Maggiolo

A dumpster fire in the rear of a condo under construction triggered a spectacular two alarm blaze on Wednesday evening, December 19th.

The fire began behind the nine story building at 1209 13th Street N.W. shortly before 6 P.M. Originating in an industrial dumpster, the flames shot up and completely engulfed the debris chute running the height of the building, also igniting the structure's façade and balconies on at least five floors.

Receiving reports of this wall of fire on several levels, Command 6 immediately requested a working fire dispatch and second alarm.

Fortunately, the buildings sprinklers were functional. They accomplished their purpose, keeping the flames from pushing inside.

The blazing exterior was quickly knocked down, and the fire brought under control without injury. The origin is under investigation.

Voices Coming From a Steam Tunnel

December 19 , 2007 by Vito Maggiolo

A report of a cry for help from the depths of a steam tunnel kicked off an unusual search and rescue effort in the Foggy Bottom area on Wednesday, December 19th.

A confined space assignment was dispatched to 24th Street and Virginia Avenue N.W. after a citizen reported hearing a voice calling for assistance from down in a steam grate.

When firefighters arrived, they also learned that federal GSA employees had been working in the steam tunnel complex, and that one person may have been unaccounted for.

Members of Rescue Squad 2 suited up and climbed down a narrow shaft to search the subterranean maze, tethered by a cable that included an oxygen line and the means to communicate above ground.

The extensive search effort proved negative, and it was eventually determined that the report was unfounded.

December 19, 2007 Story by NBC4.COM

WASHINGTON -- D.C. firefighters battled a two-alarm blaze at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building near the White House Wednesday morning. The fire broke out at about 9:30 a.m. The fire was controlled after about an hour, and fire crews are trying to vent the building. Officials are beginning to examine any historical losses the fire may have caused.

Smoke could be seen billowing from a second-story window. Fire officials said the fire likely started in an electrical closet in the vice president's suite of ceremonial offices. NBC News reported that Vice President Dick Cheney was across the street in his office in the West Wing of the White House when the fire broke out. Secret Service spokesman Darrin Blackford said the building at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Northwest, also known as the Old Executive Office Building, was evacuated as a precaution.

D.C. firefighters poured water on the blaze and moved furniture from the building onto a balcony. "There is an adult male who is described to me as being a U.S. Marine, who was on the fifth floor when the smoke began accumulating up in that area," said D.C. fire spokesman Alan Etter. "He apparently had to use his hands to break out a window on the fifth floor and then climb out on to the ledge. He suffered a laceration to his hand." Etter said the injury was minor and the man was treated at the scene and refused transportation to a hospital.

The Executive Office Building houses the Office of Management and Budget and staff of the National Security Council and other agencies. The building was built for the State, War and Navy Departments between 1871 and 1888, and designed by Supervising Architect of the Treasury Alfred Mullett. The granite, slate and cast iron exterior makes the building one of America's best examples of the French Second Empire style of architecture. Stay with News4 and NBC4.com as this story develops. Sergeant LaCore Returns Home

Video Courtesy of Statter 911

December 13 , 2007 by Vito Maggiolo

It was a joyous return home for Sergeant Michael LaCore after being released from the Washington Hospital Burn Center on Wednesday evening, December 12th.

LaCore, who was severely burned on October 29th at a second alarm on 4th street N.E., had been hospitalized ever since. When his doctors told him Wednesday evening that he could go home, he wasted no time. Mike left so quickly that most who were rushing to the hospital to see him off missed his departure.

Engine 6, where the sergeant spent most of his career, came to take him home. To everyone’s surprise and delight, Mike jumped up into the front seat, where he spent years as wagon driver, to steer the piece home itself.

He arrived at his Petworth residence to squeals of delight from his young sons, and was greeted by other family members and neighbors. Fellow firefighters and senior staff, including Fire Chief Dennis Rubin and Operations Deputy James Talbert, also stopped by to express their best wishes.

The road to recovery is still not over for LaCore, who needs to undergo continued treatment and rehabilitation as an outpatient.

75th Anniversary of Quarters of Engine 16 and Tower 3

December 16 , 2007 By Webmaster & Lieutenant Jeff Wright

Visit www.E16T3.com for more historical information.

“On December 10, 1932, a new building at 1018 13th Street, N.W., was formally dedicated with the appropriate ceremonies, under auspices of the Mid-City Citizens Association. The building was to be the new quarters of Engine Co. 16, Truck Co. 3, the Deputy Chiefs, and Water Tower No. 1, and for the first time a clinic was to be opened on the third floor of the building for use by the Board of Surgeons in treating Policemen and Firemen. The fire companies mentioned moved into their new quarters on December 16, 1932, and the Clinic was placed in service on March 6, 1933. This was a fully equipped ambulatory clinic where all firefighters, active or retired, able to travel, were seen by physicians daily, Sundays, and holidays.”

Units were dispatched at 8:57 AM for the report of a house fire – smoke coming from the roof – at 610 Aspen Street, Northwest.  First arriving firefighters found smoke coming from the eves – and from around the chimney area on the roof.  A quick interior operation located and then extinguished the fire within 30 minutes --- there were no injuries reported.

2nd Alarm 1474 Morris Road S.E.

December 5 , 2007 by Alan Etter DCFD PIO

Engine 15 and Truck 16 were dispatched at 10:29 AM for what was reported to be a defective furnace in the two-story apartment house in the 1400 block of Morris Road, Southeast.  As the units neared the location, they detected smoke in the area, and when they arrived on the scene – they discovered heavy smoke coming from the attic of 1474 Morris Road.  They signaled for the box alarm to be filled – and as Command 3 arrived, it was clear the fire had progressed from the first floor through the second floor and through the roof.

A second alarm was sounded as first arriving units began fire suppression operations.  It was noticed that the bulk of the fire damage was on the first floor around the furnace in the back of the structure.  A thorough search by Squad 3 located no occupants, and the fire was declared under control within an hour.

Two firefighters suffered what were described as minor injuries and were transported for observation.

Fire investigators were continuing to determine an exact cause.  A damage estimate was still being calculated.  At least two people were displaced.

Unstable Scaffolding at 14th and U St. NW

December 3 , 2007 by Vito Maggiolo

Howling winds and scaffolding proved an unhealthy combination in the heart of the 14th Street Corridor on Monday evening, December 3rd.

Firefighters were called to the busy intersection of 14th and U during the evening rush hour to check reports of an unstable scaffolding. They found it on the facade of a three story commercial building under renovation on the Northeast corner.

Winds gusting over 50 miles per hour had pushed the framework outwards, threatening to further topple it onto the sidewalk and street below. The initial assignment was upgraded to include Rescue Squad 1 and the Special Operation Battalion Chief.

Units on the scene teamed up to establish a collapse zone, and then teather the metal scaffolding in place using heavy chains and a come-along.

The operation was successfully completed without further damage or injuries.
