| Elevator Rescue At The Air and Space Museum |
August 24, 2008
by Vito Maggiolo
A potential challenge faced D.C. firefighters when an elevator full of visitors stalled at the Air and Space Museum on Sunday afternoon, August 24th.
Rescue Squad 1 responded on the initial call for an occupied, stuck elevator at the museum. They found the elevator, with five inside, caught in a blind shaft some distance from the nearest floor.
Sizing up the potential need to access the device from the shaft, the squad officer requested an additional rescue and the special operations battalion.
One firefighter descended to the roof of the elevator while others began setting up a rope hoist operation. Fortunately, an elevator repairman arrived more quickly than anticipated, and was able to move the conveyance to the first floor level, where the passengers were safely removed.
The occupants were evaluated by EMS and were found to be in good condition

| Leonard B. "Bud" Doggett Jr., Laid To Rest |
August 19, 2008

In grand fashion, Washington bade farewell today to Leonard B. "Bud" Doggett Jr., a humble Irishman who became a parking lot magnate and D.C. power broker whose generosity left an indelible mark on the region's law enforcement community.
Hundreds of police officers and firefighters from across the region joined captains of industry and Washington's political elite in a regal salute to Doggett, 87, who died Aug. 13. During this morning's funeral service at downtown's St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Doggett was remembered as a public steward who shunned publicity.
White-gloved officers stood at attention and celebrated Doggett's little known but lasting legacy: Heroes Inc., a nonprofit organization he founded in 1964 that has given millions of dollars to support families of law enforcement officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty.
Karmen Walker, 49, in an interview after the service, said that Doggett had a lasting impact on her and her son after her husband, Prince George's Police Cpl. Anthony M. Walker, died in 2003.
"Mr. Doggett was our angel here on earth," Walker said. "Now he's our angel from above. He'll always be here with us."
Doggett's wife, Cherrie W. Doggett, said in a eulogy that friends, family, love and generosity formed the tapestry of her husband's life.
"One of his greatest legacies was Heroes Inc., but he didn't want to talk about it," she said. The families of fallen officers, she said, "were a part of his family and he was connected by the loving concern of each and every one of his Heroes families."
Among the politicians in attendance were D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) and House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.). Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier and chiefs from neighboring counties also paid their respects. Charles H. Ramsey, the former D.C. police chief, came to the service from Philadelphia, where he now is police commissioner.
"Bud was always there, just a regular fixture," Ramsey said. "You can see from this turnout that he took care of the entire region. He just wanted to do all that he could and he never wanted any credit. He took care of every single family without question."
Lanier said Doggett went out of his way to make sure police officers, firefighters and their families were treated with "the utmost dignity."
"My police department belongs to Bud Doggett today, as it does every day," Lanier said.

At 1:11 PM, Fire & EMS responded for the report of an injured construction worker at the site, 909 New Jersey Avenue, Southeast.
First responders found a 42-year-old man who had been struck in the head by a piece of equipment on the seventh floor of the 12-story building under construction. The man was secured, placed on the Tower platform and lowered to the ground, where EMS providers took over care.
He was transported to MedStar with what were described as non-life threatening injuries. The cause of the accident was being investigated by OSHA.
