At 4:20 PM, units responded for the report of a house fire in the 4500 block of Eads St., NE. First arriving units realized the fire was actually in the 4500 block of Dix and redirected their efforts.
Smoke and fire were visible from the rear of the 2 1/2 story detatched home. A fast operation knocked the fire down quickly, and no injuries were reported. FIU was investigating along with MPD.

At 11:02, Fire & EMS was dispatched to 1600 K St., NW for the report of a building on fire. Units arrived quickly to find smoke in the block north of the White House.
Once inside Olive's restaurant, firefighters were able to locate and extinguish an oven fire that had extended to the vents. No injuries were reported, and the cause was listed as accidental.

Units responded at 12:15 PM for the report of smoke coming from a house in the 1300 block of Emerson St., NW. When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke could be seen eminating from the attic and roof of the two story single family home.
Firefighters were able to locate the fire quickly and extinguish it with no injuries to civilians. One firefighter suffered what was described as a minor ankle injury.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, and a damage estimate was still being compiled. It was reported at least four people live in the home - all had to be relocated.

| Mass Casualty Incident Declared in N.W. Bus Accident |

Scores of children and several adults were evaluated for injuries and/or transported following a chain collision involving two school buses and other vehicles Tuesday afternoon, April 28th.
Engine 6 arrived first on the scene at First Street and New York Avenue NW. They found a multi vehicle rear end collision that included two buses loaded with children on a field trip from Anne Arundel County. Engine 6’s officer immediately declared a mass casualty event.
That request brought both of the city’s mass casualty task forces, which included both MCI buses and suppression unit staffing, as well as multiple ambulances and high ranking fire and EMS officials. Several additional suppression units were also requested for manpower.
Despite the potential, there were no serious injuries.

Fourth Battalion firefighters battled an attic blaze in a Brightwood neighborhood home on Monday night, April 27th.
Fire was already showing from the 2.5 story detached dwelling at 6104 13th Street NW when box alarm units arrived shortly after 9 PM.
A working fire dispatch was sounded and an aggressive attack commenced utilizing interior hand lines and extensive roof operations.
The incident was brought under control without injury to either civilians or firefighters.

| 2 Alarm Fire Rips Through Vacant Building in N.E. |

Heavy fire in a vacant apartment building brought a second alarm assignment to the far Northeast corner of the city on Sunday afternoon April 26th.
Units were dispatched around 4:30 PM on a sweltering afternoon to 924 Division Avenue NE, a short distance from the Prince Georges border. There they found heavy fire on the second and third floors of the structure.
The second alarm was sounded as firefighters reported encountering water problems and flames extended into the cockloft. Despite these difficulties, the blaze was extinguished using an interior attack. No injuries were reported.

| Woman Saved While Attempting Suicide |

Quick thinking by DC firefighters prevented serious injury to a woman perched in a tree in Southwest Washington on Saturday afternoon, April 25th.
The initial dispatch was for a possible suicide in the 300 block of 14th Street SW. First arriving units found a lady who had climbed up into a large tree in front of the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. Additional requests were made for a truck, battalion chief, and hi-angle resources.
As the situation was being evaluated, the woman suddenly slipped and fell into the lower branches. Reacting swiftly, a ladder was quickly raised as another firefighter hauled himself into the tree to secure the victim.
Despite her struggles, firefighters kept a firm grasp and were able to pull the patient to safety. She was evaluated by EMS and transported to an area hospital.

What sounded like a potentially seriously fire turned into something much less on Friday, April 24th.
Fourth battalion units were dispatched in the late afternoon for a reported house fire on Warder Street N.W. Several additional calls indicated the fire might be on Columbia Road.
Firefighters arrived to find fire involving electrical service on the exterior of a home. The home and exposures were all checked for extension, and none was found.

| Car vs Tree on Fort Lincoln Drive |

DC Firefighters had to extricate a trapped victim after a car slammed into a tree in the Fort Lincoln neighborhood on Thursday afternoon, April 23rd.
There were three occupants in the vehicle, which struck the tree in the 3400 block of Fort Lincoln Drive NE. Two were transported to area hospitals.

A rescue assigment responded to the 1100 block of Clifton Street N.W. on Tuesday, April 21st, for an overturned vehicle.
Unirs arrived to find an SUV on its side after having struck three parked vehicles. Firefighters searched the area for victims, but apparently all occupants had fled the scene.
Rescue Squad 1 checked the stability of the vehicle, and the matter was than left in the hands of MPD.

CSX LOCOMOTIVE DERAILS AND OVERTURNS AT BENNING YARD..IN WHAT COULD BE TITLED 'RUNAWAY TRAIN PART 2.
AGAIN AT THE SAME LOCATION AS THE PREVIOUS COAL TRAIN IN THE ANACOSTIA RIVER, ANOTHER TRAIN GOT AWAY BY ITSELF, HOWEVER THIS TIME IT DERAILED AND OVERTURNED SHORT OF THE RIVER .
DCFD CREWS DID SOME FUEL CLEANUP AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED.

A HAZMAT ASSIGNMENT BROUGHT DCFD UNITS TO THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISION 700 PA. AV.N.W.FOR THE REPORT OF AN UNKNOWN POWDER SUBSTANCE. AFTER AN INTENSE INVESTIGATION BY HAZMAT CREWS. THE ALL CLEAR WAS GIVEN.

| Suspicious Fire in an Empty N.W. Store |

Fourth Battalion firefighters made quick work of a suspicious fire on Sunday afternoon, April 19th.
Smoke was showing from a vacant storefront in a three story row when units arrived at 3533 14th street N.W. shortly before 2 PM. Companies made entry and extinguished a small fire inside the empty store.
Although there were no injuries at the fire, one civilian was slightly hurt after his vehicle collided with Engine 4, which was responding to the 14th Street incident.

A fire in an upper Northwest building was quickly contained on Monday night, April 14th.
Units dispatched on a box alarm around 7:30 PM found fire in the laundry room of a three story occupied apartment building at 830 Kennedy Street N.W.
A working fire dispatch was requested, but the blaze was confined to the area of origin. There were no reported injuries.

| Confined Space Rescue Assignment |

At 1215-hrs. on Monday, April 13, 2009, T-5 and EMS units were dispatched on a Medical Local to the Dalecarlia Water Treatment Facility on MacArthur Blvd. for an injured worker. On arrival, the injured worker was found to be located 15-feet below grade in large, empty, concrete water holding reservoir. Given the scenario the remainder of the Confined Space Rescue Assignment was dispatched. Upon arrival, Special Operations and 5th Battalion units worked in a joint operation to remove the victim. Simultaneously, while rescuers below grade treated and packaged the victim for removal using a stokes basket, other rescuers at the surface cut away a metal railing system which was impeding access and egress, built a haul system and lowered a 35-foot ladder into the hole to be used as a incline for stokes as it was brought out of empty reservoir. Within 25-minutes the vicitm had been removed and transferred to waiting EMS units who transported to Georgetown Hospital for further treatment.

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY SERIOUS SITUATION WAS AVERTED BY THE QUICK ACTION OF DC FIRE CREWS, WHEN A CAR WENT OUT OF CONTROL ON 4TH STREET AND THROUGH THE FENCE AND INTO THE RESERVOIR .
GASOLINE FROM THE CAR WAS LEAKING INTO THE THE RESERVOIR ,BUT BOOMS WERE PLACED TO STOP AND CONTROL THE HAZARD , BEFORE IT BECAME A MAJOR SITUATION , AS THE RESERVOIR SUPPLIES A LARGE PORTION OF THE CITIES WATER SUPPLY.
UNITS RESPONDING WITH THE SPECIAL OPS BFC WERE E-4 ,SQUADS 2 & 1 ,HAZ MAT 1 , AND THE FIREBOAT SUPPORT UNIT .

A vacant house was the scene of a working fire dispatch in the 2nd Battalion on Thursday night, April 9.
Units dispatched around 9 PM on a box alarm to 37th and Jay Streets NE found fire coming from a dwelling at 846 48th Street NE. The detached 1.5 story frame had fire on all levels.
The blaze was knocked down via an interior attack. There were no injuries, and all searches proved negative.

PROTECTING AND HELPING THE VISITORS TO OUR NATIONS CAPITOL FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD WAS AGAIN THE CASE WHEN RESCUE SQUAD 1 WAS CALLED TO THE JEFFERSON MEMORIAL DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE CHERRY BLOSSON FESTIVAL. THIS TIME TO GIVE AID TO A VISITOR FROM KOREA WHO HAD SUFFERED A SEIZURE. THE PATIENT WAS TRANSPORTED BY AMBULANCE TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL.
1 MILLION VISITORS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD VISIT THIS FESTIVAL EACH YEAR AND THE DCFD IS ALWAYS READY TO PROVIDE HELP AS SQUAD 1 PROVED AGAIN. P.S. MONTY AND MILT FROM SQUAD 2 AS WELL !!

| Two Firefighters Injured Fighting a Vacant Building Fire in N.E. |

A vacant building in Engine 26’s first due was the scene of a working fire dispatch on Wednesday evening, April 1st.
Units arriving on the scene shortly before 9 PM found two separate fires in the ramshackle, two story structure at 1515 Rhode Island N.E.
Although the fire was quickly controlled, two firefighters suffered injuries and were transported from the scene. The blaze is under investigation.
